In order to maintain consistency in the overall style and design of each of the characters’ wardrobe, all of the artistic components of the film’s many costumes were carefully researched and developed before they were brought to life on screen. This standard of quality is evident in the meticulously detailed designs from both the spectacular to the ordinary costumes worn in all of Kevin Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables films. In this much-anticipated production Award-winning Costume Designer, Martha Mann (Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea), was comissioned by Sullivan to recreate the original artistic pedigree and overall tonality of the wardrobe established in the original Anne of Green Gables trilogy. Mann’s wonderful sense of style and creativity allowed her to craft not only many original designs, but to locate genuine period clothes, and pull many items from stock to create an accurate and rich palette that help accentuate the story.
Anne of Green Gables—A New Beginning presented a whole new challenge to the costume design team, telling the story of two distinct and archetypal periods in time. The clothes donned for both the turn of the century and for the 1940’s are unique and stylish to each era, and are integral in portraying the visual foundation of each period. Not only was the costume department doing ‘double-duty’ exam-ining the clothing worn in two different time periods, they also had to outfit an enormous cast of extras ranging in roles from young children to adults, girls and boys, and even separate divisions of social class. All of these elements combine to embellish the imaginative representation of each character, scene and storyline in this newest Anne of Green Gables film.
