True Confessions of a Heartless Girl by Martha Brooks
Synopsis: 2002 Governor General's Award for children's literature. This novel focuses on the life of seventeen-year-old Norene Stall. Blowing into the little town of Pembina Lake in southwestern Manitoba, she makes an impact instantly, a not in a good way. On the run after she steals her boyfriend's truck and some cash, she is also a soon-to-be mom. Fiercely independent and stubborn, she finds and ally and a confidant in Lynda, the harried owner of the local café, and her five-year-old son, Seth, who she's raising on her own. She also finds a friend in 76-year-old Dolores, the oldest First Nations waitress in Manitoba, who has her finger on the pulse of everything that's happening in town but who can't quite get her own life in order.
