The Gilbert Auditions

The search for the right actor to play Gilbert Blythe – a character that many consider to be the epitome of the perfect man – was crucial to the success of Anne of Green Gables. He had to have the right chemistry with Megan Follows, as well as hold his own among the many veteran actors in the film, such as Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth.

As Kevin Sullivan recalls, the search for Gilbert involved a number of auditions, but the try-outs came to an end when the film’s casting director (Sarah Polley’s mother, Diane Polley) saw Jonathan Crombie in a high school play.

Diane took a photo of Crombie straight to Kevin’s office and told him that Crombie was his Gilbert. Anne would be the first time Crombie stepped in front of the camera.

Due to popular demand, here’s a look at some of the auditions of other actors hoping to grab the iconic role, posted below.

But first, don’t miss out on your chance to have Jonathan Crombie himself answer your most burning questions about the Anne films! A selection of fan questions will be given to Crombie and he will personally answer their queries and comments in the coming weeks.

I am totally enthralled with the Megan/Jonathan pair as Anne and Gilbert. I have even recently gone to PEI and toured around, I would love to meet Jonathan in person, is he still performing Drowsy Chaperone in the US? Or, is he back in Toronto? still living in NYC? I want to rent other films he has performed in, Bullies, Cafe Romeo, and I have purchased the VHS of The Housekeeper. JC is wonderful!

Both Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie have always been MY picks for Anne and Gilbert. It only shows that the Sullivan production team knew what they were doing and made the perfect choices for us, the audience. I read L. M. Montgomery's books when I was young and the television series produced so much later were never a disappointment. Colleen Dewhurst & Richard Farnsworth! What more could we want?

I don't think Mr. Sullivan could have picked a better person to protray Gilbet other then Jonathan Crombie. I wonder what Jonathan's reaction was when he had found out he had gotten the part of Gilbert.I have been lucky enough to meet Jonathan in person, and I must say he is a wonderful person.
