Famous Anne Animated Voices

We recently brought you a look at some of the well-known voices behind the Anne of Green Gables Animated Series.  Here’s a look at a couple more celebrities from other Sullivan productions that lent their voices to entirely new characters written for the film Journey to Green Gables.

Fans of Sullivan productions will remember Kathryn Greenwood as the actress who played Grace Bailey, the loving aunt of the two Bailey boys in Wind at my Back.  But in Anne’s Journey to Green Gables, Greenwood leaves behind the hesitant ways of the mature Grace Bailey, and takes on the character of Mavis – a young woman who works for the cruel owner of Grout Orphanage.  Run by Madame Poubelle (voiced by Lally Cadeau of Road to Avonlea fame), the orphanage is more like a prison than a home and Anne must live there before she manages to escape to Green Gables.  Mavis lives in fear of her employer, but manages to help Anne along the way.

After Cedric Smith finished playing the good natured Alec King on Road to Avonlea, he took on the role of Tupper – a rotund henchman who works for Madame Poubelle. The sinister Tupper, along with his much taller sidekick, is sent to retrieve Anne from Green Gables and bring her back into the clutches of Madame Poubelle.  Smith has provided his voice to many television series and documentaries, including that of Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men.  And click here to read about Smith’s days as member of a Canadian folk rock band.

Having recently retired, "Wind at my back" was brand new to me. I have stayed up nights to watch episodes playing at 3AM because I love the series so much. Given that I was born in 1933, so much of the series was true to my own experiences as a girl. It also reminded me of a time that was so different than the hustle bustle of today. The actors were all superb and suited their roles so well. I regret that the series had to end. I miss it as I would miss the departure of a best friend. Thank you to all responsible for an excellent series. Bless you! Mary

Oops! Thanks for making me aware of the typo. I meant to say Grace. May Bailey was, of course, played by Shirley Douglas. We appreciate your interest in the series!

Um...the information above that states "Fans of Sullivan productions will remember Kathryn Greenwood as the actress who played May Bailey, the loving aunt of the two Bailey boys in Wind at my Back." is incorrect. Yes, Kathryn Greenwood played the loving aunt, but her name was GRACE Bailey. May Bailey (played by the incomparable Shirley Douglas) was the Bailey family matriarch, Grace's mother, and the Bailey boys' stoic grandmother. (May and Grace are at top of my 'favorite characters list' in the WaMB series. Oh how I wish Kevin Sullivan would do a new reunion episode while we still have the great original actors with us to reprise their roles!)
