The most recognizable qualities of Hamilton’s performance of Rachel Lynde is her strong voice, unwavering opinions and her habit of meddling in other people’s affairs. The phrase, “You know I pride myself on speaking my mind”, is often heard emanating from the stubborn woman’s mouth.
Viewers are first introduced to Rachel near the beginning of Anne of Green Gables when Marilla witnesses the first meeting between Anne and Rachel - which ultimately ends in disaster. No two people could be more different.
From that moment on, however, Rachel became an integral woman in Anne’s life – whether she was warning Marilla about the type of orphan that “puts strychnine in the well”, quarrelling with Anne over her cow, Dolly, or getting misty-eyed when Anne leaves Green Gables to attend Kingsport Ladies College.
Though Rachel Lynde is often the first to aggravate situations, she also provides comic relief and is someone who can always be relied upon. Here is a video celebrating some of Hamilton’s most memorable scenes, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews!
