This famous redhead was originally created by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren back in the early 1940’s. “Pippi” was actually named by her nine-year-old daughter who came up with the title when she was home sick from school one day and asked Astrid to make up a story for her. Lindren’s first three Pippi chapterbooks were published between 1945 and 1948, with additional books being published all the way up to 2000. Her books have between translated in 64 languages and made into both films and television series. Astrid is the world’s 25th most translated author.
1907-2003: Katharine Hepburn
The four-time Academy Award-winning actress remains one of the most acclaimed leading ladies in film history. Though her red hair was not obvious in her first few black and white films, Katharine’s red locks became famous once colored-posters were introduced. She starred in such films as The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, Woman of the Year, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and On Golden Pond. Anne of Green Gables fans may not know that Katharine is actually the aunt of Schuyler Grant – the actress who played Diana Barry.
1830-1886: Emily Dickinson
The prolific American poet is famous for her reclusive lifestyle and quiet life. In fact, most of her work wasn’t published until after her death, when her family and friends published her pieces.
1553-1603: Elizabeth I
Known as “The Virgin Queen”, Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She was the last Tudor Queen and her rule over England and Ireland came to be known as the Golden Age.
