Anne Musical Geared for Change

No one usually equates Anne Shirley with controversy, but this year’s production of Anne of Green Gables: The Musical for the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown has had its fair share over the past few months.  And it all comes down to the fact that the musical is undergoing its first major changes since the 1970’s.

Back in December, it was reported that the children of the musical’s two original writers were unhappy with some of the changes being proposed.  Then there were allegations that the musical’s production designer had quit, followed by rumors that the show’s director was thinking of stepping down too.

It wasn’t until March that positive news came of an agreement between all quarters of the production, including the children of the show’s writers, to continue on with show - changes and all.  A new scene would be written by Don Harron, who co-wrote the musical’s original script back in 1964, and a new concept and look would be given to the production (as can be seen in the photo above).

Now, we’ve just heard that fans can watch a series of YouTube videos that explain in detail all the changes that are being made.  One behind-the-scenes video will be posted each month leading up to the show, which premieres June 28.  The first was published in mid-April, drawing hundreds of views, and the second will be posted in the second week of May.

The director of sales with the Centre, Penny Walsh McGuire, told the CBC that this web series is designed to prepare people for the new changes.  "It's important for people to understand what they are going to experience when they walk into the theatre on opening night for Anne of Green Gables: The Musical. And as we're going through the process, why not share it with them?"
