Twain lived from 1835 to 1910, and spent most of his years in the southern United States. Twain was celebrated for his wit and satiric voice, and for his ability to translate colloquial speech to print.

Twain is best known for his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These books follow the adventures of the young Tom Sawyer, as he goes about his wild adventures.Having based his own literary career on exceptional youth characters, it is perhaps unsurprising that Twain was so taken with Montgomery's Anne. Upon reading Anne of Green Gables, he sent Montgomery a letter of praise, congratulating her on writing "the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice."
