Sometimes the best way to experience the scenic beauty of a place like P.E.I isn’t through the clouded window of a tour bus or the closed-in atmosphere of a long car ride.  Instead, cycling may be the most appropriate way to take in the sand dunes, forests and red clay roads under your tires.  In the words of Katherine Brooke from Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, if people, “want to know - not just believe that the world is round,” they may want to try this more organic traveling experience.

Cycling has become an increasingly popular means of vacation travel – and it doesn’t have to be an extreme sport (unless you want it to be).  It can accommodate families, couples or experienced solo travelers.  Cycling tour companies provide a number of packages that will let people choose what kind of terrain they want to travel on and the intensity of the experience they wish to receive.

Here are some tips if you’re thinking of cycling solo:

- If this is your first time cycling, start out slowly and let your body adapt to cycling far distances
- The quality of your bike is an important factor, so make sure yours is designed for the kind of terrain and distances you are about to travel
- A lot of cyclists start off with a basic mountain bike and then add features over a period of time.  But make sure you have good brakes, endurable tires, small gears, a solid frame and a comfortable seat
- Make sure you know what kind of terrain you’re about to venture onto and how frequently resting spots and accommodations lie along the way
