Sibling Rivalry Sparks Important Lessons

As the summer winds down so too must the patience of parents be wearing thin after a full summer with the children at home.  The fighting, though most often innocent, that goes on between brothers and sisters is a normal phase that ends at adolescence (or, in some cases, only continues!).  Here’s a look at how Anne of Green Gables: The Animated Series handles the issue of incessant sibling fighting.

In the episode “Oh Brother”, Felix and Felicity King are driving each other to the edge of insanity.  A King Family reunion is on the horizon, but the two just can’t get along. Anne, armed with the “wisdom” of an only child, tries to step in and settle their disagreements, but it only aggravates the situation.  Soon, however, the pair are able to discover aspects of each other that they never before appreciated and they learn to love their family unconditionally.

Like all the episodes in the animated series, "Oh Brother" provides a number of lessons that can be used by both teachers and parents.

Here are some questions or discussions that can be brought up after viewing the show:

- There are no right or wrong answers to sibling rivalry, so try discussing all the different types of families that exist, and their many shapes and forms.
- Have children talk about what they think is hard about being a brother or sister.
- Have children discuss what it is that bothers them about their siblings, but also what they like about them and what they do for each other that makes them happy.
