The desire to sport cutting edge fashion is a universal instinct felt by children at different stages of life.  The preoccupation that some children have with their appearance is a natural stage that everyone goes through – (but which some never get out of!).

This was not lost on the creators of Anne: The Animated Series, which is why they devoted an episode called “Sleeves” (Volume 2) to this issue.  It explores the way children and adults can learn to be proud of who they are and where they come from, and how they can build that self-esteem.

In this episode, the world-famous singer Amelia Evans returns to Avonlea.  The whole town awaits her arrival with eager anticipation and plans a talent show held in her honour.  All the adults and children try to put their best foot forward, hoping to impress the star and appear to be “modern”, while Anne can think only of wearing that elusive dress with big puffed sleeves.

There are some valuable lessons to be learned by children watching this episode, which was created with the help of an educational consultant.  Teachers and parents can talk about fashion and whether being “in style” (in their clothing, tastes and pursuits) is a worry for young people.  Asking children if they feel the need to be fashionable, and why, is a great way to explore how they see the difference between external qualities (outward appearance, fashion) and internal qualities (kindness, acceptance, sense of humor, etc.).

Here is a small clip from the show that illustrates some of these points!
