As for Anne, this custom was very much part of her daily lifestyle. She would have tea and a small snack/meal eaten after mid-afternoon. This was a formal occasion that was treated with great seriousness.
“Diana came over, dressed in her second best dress and looking exactly as it is proper to look when asked out to tea. At other times she would run into the kitchen without knocking; but now she knocked primly at the front door. And when Anne, dressed in her second best, as primly opened it, both little girls shook hands as gravely as if they had never met before.” – Anne of Green Gables
Although nowadays tea-times are for special occasions. There are many treats displayed with now many different types of teas to choose from, but some of those treats are sandwiches, fresh fruits, cheese, breads, cookies, cakes, pies, tarts and many other wonderful treats. Why so many treats? Well now tea time is shared with a group of people - not just two or three. So really it is like a small party, but with a more traditional touch.
