Teenagers in Vietnam are delving into the world of Anne of Green Gables in celebration of the classic novel being published in Vietnamese for the first time.

Through a contest organized by the Canadian Embassy, called “Canada and the World of Anne of Green Gables”, Vietnamese youth from ages 13 to 19 can submit either a drawing or an essay of up to 1,000 words on the subject of Canada or Anne’s world.  The winners will receive cash prices from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, books from the publisher – the Nha Nam Company – and other gifts from Canada.

The novel, which celebrated its centennial in 2008, has been translated into 30 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies around the world.

The contest was put together by the Canadian Embassy, the Vietnam Canada Friendship Association and Nha Nam Culture and Communications JSC, with the view that teenagers around the world can all identify with elements of the novel.

“While the story takes place in rural Canada a long time ago, many teenagers around the world today see a bit of themselves in the book,” says Ambassador Deanna Horton.  “Anne Shirley’s adventures and challenges have entranced teenagers worldwide.  Through this contest, I hope that Vietnamese teenagers will also be inspired.”

The winners will be announced on July 1 – Canada Day.
