In the very last episode of Road to Avonlea, "So Dear to My Heart", Hetty King - played by the late Jackie Burroughs - makes a toast at Felicity King’s wedding. In her speech, Hetty says that anyone who ever leaves Avonlea should rest easy knowing that they always have a home to come back to.
In a way, this statement reflects how fans of the series feel about the show, because whatever is going on in their lives,
Road to Avonlea represents another world they can “come home” to. When speaking to fans about
Road to Avonlea, they often associate the show with feelings of warmth and comfort. One viewer told me that whenever she hears the theme music now, she happily – and a little wistfully – sighs inwardly. It takes her back to her childhood.
In her emotional toast to the newlyweds, which is posted above, Hetty says the following:
“Change is inevitable, of course it is. People will leave our town – some may have to. But Avonlea will never vanish…wherever they go, all the young people of Avonlea, the memory of this place - the people, the land, the sea - these things will never be forgotten, but will remain in their hearts forever.”
