Most travel articles that talk about the beauty of Prince Edward Island begin stating the Canadian province’s obvious connection to Anne of Green Gables.  But now, the gorgeous island has another claim to add to its list of worthy achievements and attributes: it has just been named 2011’s “Undiscovered Golf Destination of the World” by the International Golf Travel Writers Association.

PEI was one of six finalists, which included Sweden, Colombia, Bulgaria, Iceland and Mississippi.  Last year’s honour went to Brazil.

But this isn’t the only praise that’s been given to PEI’s precious greens.  Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, claimed that PEI contained 10 of the top 100 golf courses in Canada, while Golf Digest said the tiny province had 5% of the top 350 courses in North America.

PEI’s 32 courses are all distinct in style and architecture, and have been designed by famous architects.   They can also all be found within 30 minutes of the province’s capital city, Charlottetown.

As this PR Newswire article stated, “From the air, PEI even looks like one giant golf course with expanses of green speckled with sand and water traps, interspersed with wood lots.”
