Silly as these games may be, I am of the opinion that women should be allowed to have some fun at their own parties without having to worry about being called old fashioned or backward. It wouldn’t seem right if there wasn’t an element of “cheesy” tradition. And the fun is heightened when all the women recognize how silly they are acting, which they always do.
But, in order to appease those who may be looking for a new form of entertainment, here are some more intellectual party games that date back to the Edwardian era. The games “Quotable Quotes” and "Questions" are included in the Cooking with Anne of Green Gables cookbook. Here are the rules:
Quoteable Quotes
This is a game for connoisseurs of literature. Begin by selecting a passage from one of your favorite authors, like Lucy Maud Montgomery. Read the beginning and end of the quotation, omitting 1 or 2 sentences in the middle. The guests are then instructed to fill the gap with their best prose. The attempts are collected and read aloud along with the correct quotation. Guests vote on which prose they think is the correct answer. They may also vote for the most entertaining entry.
In the end, a full list of all your guests’ favorite quotes would make a nice take-home gift for the bride or mother-to-be.
Questions
In this game the guests try to hold a normal conversation, but every sentence must be in the form of a question. When someone fails to phrase their words as an interrogation they are out of the game. The winner is the last person remaining.
