Writer, director and producer Sarah Polley has once again helped advance the recognition of Canadian film.  The movie Splice, in which the Road to Avonlea actress starred with Oscar-winner Adrien Brody, was named 2010’s highest-grossing Canadian film.

In this sci-fi thriller, Polley and Brody play scientists working together to create a human-animal hybrid.  The film made $2.1 million in domestic box office sales and $26.9 million worldwide.

Splice was directed by Vincenzo Natali, who is famous for his 1997 film, Cube, and co-written by Doug Taylor.  Both men were presented with the Golden Box Office Award by Telefilm Canada at a genetics lab in Toronto this morning.  They each get a $20,000 cheque.

Telefilm is a government-funded agency that helps support filmmaking in Canada.  And the importance of the organization is not lost on Natali. “The fact that 'Splice' was a box office success in its native country is another testament to Telefilm's foresight and their faith in Canadian filmmakers to produce popular entertainment,” he says.  “Without their support this strange but beautiful creature could never have come to life.”

Taylor says that receiving awards like the “Goldie” shows other writers like himself that they can work in Canada and be ambitious in their work, knowing that they will receive a worldwide audience with help from home.
