Janet King: A Mother's Love

Of all the mothers in Avonlea, Janet King seems to represent the most traditional vision of motherhood.  Her love of family, the deep companionship she shares with her husband, Alec, and the warmth she radiates to her friends and relations all seem to encapsulate many of the traditional aspects of motherhood.

However, Janet also shares a burden with other mothers, not just of her generation, but the world over: the often comical lack of appreciation she experiences from her children.

In Season 2’s episode, “A Mother’s Love”, Janet’s daughter Felicity decides to enter Women’s Own Magazine's “Mother of the Year” essay contest.  Though her intentions are good, Felicity carries around the notion that she knows better than Janet – especially in domestic matters – and she sees no harm in letting Janet know that.  In the excerpt below, Felicity talks to her pregnant mother about the essay contest in the King family kitchen.

“I have sung your praises mother.  You would blush to read it.  Though of course, I haven’t mentioned your lapses as a homemaker.”

“Why, thank you, Felicity.”

(Felicity turns to the kitchen sink and reaches for a glass) “I’ve told you time and again mother, if you wait for the glasses to dry by themselves, they’re bound to streak.”

“Oh well, Felicity dear, one day you’ll realize that when it comes to raising a family, there are some things more important than sparkling glassware.”

“I won’t be mentioning that you said that in my essay, mother.  I’d like to win this contest.”

Though it is never meant to be hurtful, the digs children give their mothers are always taken in stride without a moment's hesitation of forgiveness on the mother's part.  And Janet's disposition is a perfect example of this.
