A Photo A Day: Richard Farnsworth Is Matthew

Written by Clare

Anne of Green Gables fans may know the stories of how Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst were cast in their respective roles, but what about Richard Farnsworth? The beloved actor initially took the role of Matthew Cuthbert because his wife persuaded him to. She loved the Anne novels as a child.

A Photo A Day: Under the Piano

For most Anne of Green Gables fans, Megan Follows is synonymous with Anne Shirley.  The identity of both actress and character is so closely intertwined, but there are other notable roles, even within the Sullivan film library, that Megan took on.

The actress who plays the wife of Reverend Allan, Christiane Krüger, and Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert) share a moment during a break in the filming of Anne of Green Gables.  This production still captures an off-camera moment during the aftermath of the famous raspberry cordial incident.

In the following behind-the-scenes video, Megan Follows (Anne Shirley in Anne of Green Gables) tells the real story behind the filming of the infamous plum pudding scene.  Follows also recalls what it was like shooting scenes with Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert) and what mischief the two could get into when they forgot their lines!

Here is a behind-the-scenes photo from Sullivan Entertainment’s archives in which Anne Shirley, played by Megan Follows, consults the script during a break in filming.

At no point in Anne of Green Gables does Mr. Sadler smile at Anne, let alone hug her, but in this behind-the-scenes still shot from the set, actors Megan Follows and Joachim Hansen are all smiles.

Watch The Sequel in HD for the First Time!

Written by Clare

Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (Anne of Avonlea) is available for the first time in High Definition at Shop At Sullivan.com!  Pre-orders can now be placed for the classic sequel to Kevin Sullivan’s award-winning Anne of Green Gables.  To see the difference between the old version of Anne and the new re-mastered, widescreen footage, check out the video below.

Although Anne Shirley is beloved for her inspired delivery of dialogue, she was actually first introduced to movie audiences in the silent film era.  And today, the historic Clevelands House in Muskoka, Ontario, is recreating the long-lost film version of Anne of Green Gables, made in 1919.  By 1999, the film's prints were believed to be lost.

There’s been a recent boost in Prince Edward Island’s tourism revenue and fingers are pointing at Anne of Green Gables as the reason. According to a recent article, nearly one third of the island’s tourism revenue from last year ($370 million) was generated by tourists coming to see the island because of Anne, specifically.  And this year, the numbers have kept growing.

The latest Smartphone App has a direct tie to the history of Anne of Green Gables!  As part of Parks Canada’s new initiative to preserve our interest in Canada’s landmarks, they have made a special Heritage Gourmet App that has recipes from more than 80 historic sites across Canada – Green Gables being one of them.

PEI’s Harbourfront Threatre production, Anne & Gilbert, is coming to the island’s historic Green Gables on Wednesday, Aug. 10.  This play was inspired by the sequel novels to Anne of Green Gables and visitors to the house will get to see one of the its main musical numbers, “Island Through and Through”.

Meeting Anne Shirley and Matthew Cuthbert was just one of the highlights of the Royal couple’s recent visit to Prince Edward Island.  Here is a look at the other events the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took part in.

Looking for Anne Screens in PEI

Written by Clare

Not long ago we brought you news of a brand new film, Looking for Anne, that delves into the world that inspired our favourite heroine.  On Friday, the film had its first screening in Prince Edward Island at City Cinema and plays there until Jan. 13.

While it is always worthwhile to consider why Anne strikes a chord with her fans, it’s even more interesting to ask why she’s so beloved by Japanese fans, in particular. And that’s exactly what a new film is asking. Looking for Anne is a Japanese-Canadian co-production that premieres today at Montreal’s Cinema Quartier Latin.

Anne of Green Gables was voted one of the top five favourite Canadian shows of the past 25 years by TV viewers across the country.  This was the result of a vote that had people pick from a list of Canadian shows in honour of the Gemini’s silver anniversary.

“You know something, Diana?  We are rich.  We have sixteen years to our credit and we both have wonderful imaginations.  We should be as happy as queens.”

Anne fans will be happy to learn that they can enjoy their favourite Anne of Green Gables scenes in tangible works of art!

Since her creation more than 100 years ago, the character of Anne Shirley never ceases to stir up a little controversy every now and then - both on and off the page.  This time, a debate has sprung up over a new song about the fiery red-head called “Anne of Green Gables Who Dances on Tables”.

As one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Canada, Green Gables in Prince Edward Island holds an emotionally-charged appeal for all Anne lovers.  Exactly what it is about the farmhouse that people feel connected to is probably a private experience for everyone.  But here is some information that all admirers of the book will appreciate: the history of the real Green Gables.

A Stroll Down Lover's Lane

Many of the sites described by L.M. Montgomery in her Anne novels have become famous worldwide and attract many visitors to P.E.I..  One of the most popular attractions is Lover's Lane – an existing road that Montgomery herself rambled along many times and from which she drew inspiration and peace of mind.  Here is an excerpt from her journal in which she describes the lane’s charm.

A Trip Through Rosedale

Written by Clare

This production still captures the scene when Anne and the students from Kingsport Ladies College enjoy a carriage ride through the streets surrounding Mrs. Harris’ grand estate in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel.  This scene was actually filmed in the streets of Toronto and the location was picked for its markedly Edwardian ambiance.

When Anne and Diana arrive at Josephine Barry’s house it is the first time that Anne is truly stepping into grandeur.  Never before had she been exposed to such richness, as well as city life.  Here is a look at the filming location that the Sullivan team thought would best inspire Anne’s awakening to this new lifestyle.

The trepidation Anne feels as the new English teacher at Kingsport Ladies College could only have been heightened by the sight of the Gothic-inspired Penryn Park - the baronial manor house that stood in for the college in the film.

Bright River station is more than just a railway station.  As Anne waits on the platform for Matthew Cuthbert, she is experiencing the final moments of her life as an orphan and is about to begin a new life in which she belongs to people and a place .  The image of Anne, sitting on the station bench, is an iconic symbol of the Anne movies.  And it is worth taking a look at the history of the authentic location in which it was captured.

Kevin Sullivan’s very first experience with Anne of Green Gables came in Grade 5 when his teacher read the classic novel aloud to his class.  Little did he know that years later he would turn the story he experienced when he was just a young boy into his own vision and catapult Anne onto a stage viewed by an international audience.

From Boarding School to Asylum

Written by Clare

“The romance of winter was captured at its most illusory…” - Kevin Sullivan, on the filming of the proposal scene in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel.

Viewers may not know that the location of the infamous proposal scene between Morgan Harris and Anne Shirley was chosen at the last minute under hurried conditions.

If people are a product of their environment, then it makes sense that the home of Mrs. Harris, in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, would be extremely aristocratic and austere in style.

Entering the estate of Mrs. Margaret Harris, the controlling mother of Anne’s suitor, Morgan Harris, was somewhat intimidating for Anne.  The grandeur of Maplehurst and its great expanse of property was very impressive.  But if you’ve ever wondered where this grand estate actually exists, we have some behind the scenes information for you.
