If people are a product of their environment, then it makes sense that the home of Mrs. Harris, in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel, would be extremely aristocratic and austere in style.

The interior scenes of Maplehurst were shot at Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, which was the home of one of Canada’s first premiers, Sir Allan Napier MacNab.  The castle is now a historic site and museum, offering tours of 40 rooms (though the house boasts more than 70 in total!) in the 18,000-square-foot home.

The interior design of Dundurn Castle was centered on the style “Strawberry Hill Gothic”, which was influenced by medieval architecture and was brought back to popularity in the 19th century.  Another style element that viewers may be able to identify is the use of tartan, which is commonly identified with kilt material, as can be seen in the curtains behind Morgan Harris in the picture below.

Tartan was used for decoration because of its historic association with power and entitlement.  In a historical sense, tartans give off the impression of privilege, as they were used by ancient clans as symbols and identifiers of noble families.  Today, tartan is used for furniture and design, as well as clothing, and it still signifies feelings of nobility and “old money” which is why they were used in the Harris home.
