Amidst the countless production stories about the actors and the filming of the first Anne of Green Gables movie, here are some fun facts that fans might be interested in learning!

  • The very first scene where Anne is walking through the woods on her way to Mrs. Hammond’s was actually one of the last scenes shot.
  • The actress who played Mrs. Hammond, Jayne Eastwood, actually improvised her notorious line, “Eat!” when her children are all around the kitchen table.
  • Colleen Dewhurst loved Anne of Green Gables ever since she was a little girl.  It was the first book her mother read to her and later, as a mother of two sons, Colleen also read the book aloud to them.
  • Executive producer Trudy Grant was a double for Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla) during the scene where she and Anne are driving in the carriage away from Green Gables.
  • Trudy Grant’s help also came into play during the scene when Anne and Diana are talking during sunset.  Trudy had to hold their dresses down, while lying on the ground.
  • The famous line that Miss Stacey tells Anne, “The truth will set you free”, is engraved in the archway at Victoria College in Toronto.  Other scenes from the movie were filmed at that location.
  • Colleen Dewhurst really disliked wearing a corset.
  • Cedric Smith, who plays Alec King in Road to Avonlea, first starred in Anne of Green Gables as the Reverend Allan.
  • Schuyler Grant (Diana) had to wear a black wig because her hair is naturally light brown.
  • A double was used for Richard Farnsworth during some of the shots of the famous plum pudding scene.  His close-up shots were filmed at a different time.
