An Anne of Green Gables follower on twitter recently posted the results of a survey she conducted about Anne.  Ellen Andrews, of Andrews Media Design, asked her followers this question: Why do you think Anne (of Green Gables) remains so popular today not only to Islanders, but tourists as well?

Ellen says she received an overwhelming number of written responses, which will be included in the July issue of Ni Hao PEI – the island’s first Chinese-English bilingual monthly newspaper.

Here are a selection of some of the answers she got (to see her full results, click here).  After reading these, please comment with your own opinion!

A: I think that the characters resonate with people. We all want to find our
"Gilbert" and Marilla's softening towards Anne is so heartwarming. Who doesn't
love Matthew, too?

A: We can all see a bit of ourselves in Anne and the stories take us back to a
time when people respected one another and life was simpler.

A: It's a classic story set on a beautiful Island and Maud makes PEI as much of
a character in the book as Anne herself.

A: It's a beautiful story with relatable parts & characters that many of us grew up
with.

A: The story really represents the warm and country atmosphere of PEI and
allows the beauty of the island to be seen in the eyes of a young girl who
became a success despite her rough beginning.

A: I think that it's well written and deals with themes of abandonment and the
need to feel like you belong. On some level, who can't relate to that!

A: Typing on an iPhone so excuse the jilted sentences...
1. She has such a positive attitude and is a happy character. It makes girls want to be her friend.
2. She is intelligent and ambitious, but remembers her roots and stays grounded.
This is appealing, especially to women.
3. She gets the boy. We all love a good romance.
4. The setting of PEI and Green Gables sounds like a never-never land of imagination. To know that it's a real place is appealing to tourists. The physical beauty is something tourists want to see.
5. The movies from the 1980s helped us imagine the characters from the book even better, so that is appealing.
6. The book is written by a woman at a time when women had to struggle to get published. Plus, it's so relatable.

A: She's the girl you grow up wishing you could be.

Anne is just the kind of friend we all would love to have! She is so kind and sweet and she is able to find something good in everyone who spends some time with her! Her story is simple, but it captures every reader and " movie watcher" 's attention and interest! Megan Follows was the real perfect Anne Shirley!! I loved her! She was wonderful at expressing each different feeling and emotion Anne felt at the various moments! I'll never be bored, while watching the movies or reading Montgomery's novels, because she's such a great character, my heroine! I love both Anne Shirley and Megan Follows

Mainly because Anne is a kindred spirit! The first book I read was "Anne of Avonlea" when my mom lent me her book - she'd read it in her youth - and I fell in love. Years later I bought 'Anne of Green Gables' and cried my eyes out when Matthew died, even though I already knew he'd died from having read book number 2 years earlier. I love how nature is present all throughout the stories, how it's part of Anne's life, mood and emotions. It takes me back to a time when I wasn't born and yet I get the feeling of having been part of Anne's life somehow. I also love Anne's love - and hate - for certain words and names! I'm like that too and always felt I was a bit "weird" for being like that, and Anne made me feel special about it instead. When I saw the TV series, it was heaven! Megan Follows is such a perfect Anne! The whole cast matches those characters in my mind! I will always love Anne! Every now and then I pick the books up and re-read them again and they take me all the way back to Prince Edward Island, smelling the sea, Snow Queen in full blossom and being young and innocent again.

Who doesn't LOVE to see the underdog win?? That is who Anne is. From winning over Marilla's heart to the folks in Kingsport and everyone in between, she always overcame adversity with such grace. What a lovely character for all of us to emulate.

Everybody can relate to a character in the books. I also think that the love that Matthew & Marilla showed Anne is the love that we all need and that we would love to give. Anne had a hard life before PEI. Her life became a new kind of Cinderella story.

Because Anne makes simple, normal life so appealing. She takes what she gets and makes the best of it.

After watching Anne of Green Gables again I was reading the credits when I realised that Richard Farnsworth had a stand in. Does anyone know why he had a stand in?

Why? Because beauty and innocence is so rare these days, we desperately want to hang onto what we see in this film. Though it is fiction, we so long for those paths into wholeness, to see as Anne saw from a pure perspective - yet while being so human.

I am a literature teacher and upon reading the books after six years of teaching literature I realized that there is technically no plot to the books at all and yet I was stil as enticed in the stories as I was when I was twelve. Why? I think because it's a simple story of life. In a world where everything is so sensationalized until it's a hundred times bigger than when it started and having major drama is more desired than the truth, it is nice to sit back to a story where the major drama is the color of one's hair or how to turn down the proposal of your best bud or the passing a test. We all longer for days of simplicity and that is what the Anne books offer us: a simpler life.

PEI opens up a broad scope for the imagination - Gilbert is the safe, chivalrous gentleman that we all love to love - Anne herself is the picture of assurance and strength. She didn't let people belittle her; she didn't let circumstances slow her down; she didn't let romance "mess her up" until she was well ready for it. I think we all wish we were more Anne and less Josie. =]
