Anne of Green Gables fans may know the stories of how Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst were cast in their respective roles, but what about Richard Farnsworth? The beloved actor initially took the role of Matthew Cuthbert because his wife persuaded him to. She loved the Anne novels as a child.

And Colleen Dewhurst was thrilled with the choice. Colleen was quoted saying, “I love him! When Kevin Sullivan called and said we have Richard Farnsworth for Matthew, I screamed!”

I've never read a book whose characters I envisioned so closely match those of a person or team who made a movie. Although I didn't care for my own interpretation of Matthew Cuthbert, I thought Richard Farnsworth was absolutley the best choice anyone could have made!

To me, and just like the RTA and WAMB series, Kevin Sullivan's team could not have chosen a better cast for the AoGG movies. For most viewers (including me), because of the character actors, we have come to know and appreciate and love the characters - they've become dear friends that we never tire of "visiting with" (watching). In the AoGG series, Matthew along with Marilla are my household's favorite characters. No one can ever top Richard Farnsworth or Colleen Dewhurst in those roles.

Everyone of the characters were excellently cast! I couldn't picture any other people playing any of the characters! I loved them all.
