A good friend to Anne’s late mother, Bertha, Louisa Thomas embraces Anne when she is orphaned. Acting as a surrogate mother, she takes Anne along with her and her three children to stay with her mother-in-law, Amelia, after they flee from their home. Nurturing and caring, she welcomes Anne into her household, defending her from those who don’t approve of her family.
Despite her good-natured manner, she never fails to stand up for what she believes in, not being intimidated by those around her. Whether it’s to her less than easy to get along with mother-in-law, who at times makes her life difficult, or crabby housekeeper Hepzibah who doesn’t agree with her decision to take Anne in, Louisa always manages to keep a strong disposition, not wavering in her stance.
