The two youngest children of Louisa and Reverend Thomas, Jock and Keith, can be described in one word as rambunctious. The boys develop a bond with young Anne, who takes them under her wing by acting as a role model. Their relationship with her gradually evolves to that more of siblings as the time they all spend together continue to increase.

A friendship ensues between them and Anne is able to confide in Nellie, allowing her to express her true ideas and thoughts. When Anne is faced with some trying obstacles, Nellie provides a refuge for her, helping her out in several sticky situations.
