Pivotal Act of Defiance at Historic Location

Viewers witness one of the most important acts of defiance between Grace Bailey and her mother when Grace goes against May’s wishes and boards a train to attend a wedding, along with Judd Wainwright, in Season One’s episode, “Aunt Grace’s Wedding”.

It is the couple’s first official date and Grace is very eager to go to the out-of-town wedding.  But May disapproves of Judd’s financial position and, having her eye on another suitor for Grace, refuses to give permission.  See the video below to watch the “showdown” at the train station!

In addition to the thrill of the scene, viewers are treated to a glimpse of a historic location when they watch Grace board the train.  In the first season of Wind at my Back, many scenes, like the one below, required a train station, but unfortunately it is extremely difficult to find a functioning steam locomotive together with a 1930’s train station.

To solve this problem, Sullivan Entertainment’s production team built a train station in the parking lot of a feed mill directly across from the historic South Simcoe Railway in Tottenham, Ontario. Shooting at this location had spectacular results and gave the show an incredible sense of authenticity. However, shooting in Tottenham on an ongoing basis would have been extremely difficult due the fact that a main road had to be closed every time the train pulled into the station.

As a result, when the show was renewed for a second season, the decision was made to move the station from Tottenham and make it a key part of the back lot set of New Bedford that was being constructed at Sullivan Studios in Scarborough, Ontario.
