After the tragic death of their father, Hub and Fat Bailey have a hard time dealing with the presence of Max as Honey’s new husband. However, their hesitation to accept him as their father – or to even call him that – is not a result of Max’s personal character, but their reluctance to accept this monumental change and a new authority figure in their lives.
Luckily, Max is accepting of their feelings. And in Season Two’s episode, “Never Sleep Three in a Bed”, there is a major breakthrough between Max and the boys. Hub was extremely upset about his father’s death and, in his grief, blamed his father for leaving them.
But Max helped Hub work through his anger about his father not being around anymore. He encouraged them to never forget about their father and told them that he was not in any way trying to replace him – making Max a worthy character to highlight in the lead up to Father’s Day.
