Graveyard Wanderings

Lucy Maud Montgomery is famous for her love of Prince Edward Island and all its beauty that endlessly inspired her writing.  And her journals and letters reveal that she did not shy away from the places that most people tend to avoid or connect with sadness.

In a letter to her Scottish pen pal, G.B. MacMillan, she writes:

“One evening I spent wandering about the graveyard where so many of our dead people lie.  It was not a sorrowful tryst.  I felt very happy and among friendly presences.  I felt again acutely the peculiar, indefinable charm of P.E. Island.  A certain wellspring of fancy which I thought had gone dry in me bubbled up as freshly as of old.”

This photo was taken of the Cavendish Cemetery – the graveyard that L.M. Montgomery was most likely writing about.
