Lessening your carbon footprint can actually start with your footwear.

Eco-friendly fashion trends have been on the rise in the last couple of years and have never been more popular.  Now, it isn’t just fashionable to be environmentally conscious, it’s fashionable to dress that way too.

One of the ways to do this is to look for organic clothing, which has become increasingly popular in stores each season, as well as online.  Sometimes the materials that you least expect to be worn as clothing are the most environmentally friendly and fashionable, like wearing hemp shoes or having bamboo in your clothing – both of which are sustainable materials.  And, though it may seem shallow at first, following what your favourite celebrities are wearing is a good way to stay on top of what is eco-friendly and fashionable.  They’ll be the ones trying to make statements with their clothing and would be most on top of the latest trends.

New technology for eco-friendly clothing is being developed all the time.  You can wear clothing that actually has SPF built into it, which ultimately cuts back on sunblock purchases.  And sometimes the most everyday material is the most fashionable, like cotton for shirts and dresses, soy, organic silk, canvas for purses and handbags, and even recycled tires for belts.  Just make sure to check the label so that the cotton is 100% organic.  And if you can, buy locally or from second-hand stores.  If that’s not possible, make sure you know where your products were made and what kind of conditions they were made under, because that’s just as important as what material they are made from.

If you’re interested in becoming more environmentally friendly in your home and garden, visit our Anne of Green Gables and Road to Avonlea lifestyle blogs for tips and information on the eco-friendly products Shop At Sullivan is now offering.
