Bringing Spring Indoors

“Spring is the palate-cleanser season—the champagne sorbet between courses in nature’s sumptuous meal.” – Living with the Seasons

With the Spring season already underway and Easter fast approaching, there are ways to bring elements of the season into your home, even when the weather does not reflect the promise of warmth.

Here are some tips from the book, "Living with the Seasons", that will help you decorate your home and host memorable events by following a few simple suggestions.

Room Decorating

-    Replace your flannel bed sheets with the linen or cotton ones you stored away last autumn.
-    Bring light-coloured flowers in from the garden – such as greens, and pale pink and white tulips.
-    Roll up your rugs to expose the floors underneath.
-    Perhaps take down heavy drapes to make the windows look bigger and brighter.
-    Replace the slipcovers on your cushions with lighter, pastel colours.
-    Tall, elongated vases, filled with white tulips and pink peonies, will make a dramatic statement in a room.

Table Settings

-    Make your table settings more casual by replacing heavy tablecloths with open-weave ones.  Try bamboo place mats as well.
-    You don’t always have to have arrangements of flowers on your table.  Just cut a few stalks of asparagus and place them in a tumbler of water.  This arrangement looks even better when placed beside a vase of yellow iris.
-    Using light wood utensils and dishware also complements this style.
-    Mount an arrangement of pool moss on a glass plate.
-    For Easter, and throughout the season, keep a number of Araucana eggs in hand-painted bowls, and even scatter a few around the moss plant.

An Indoor Garden

-    If you don’t have a garden, or the weather isn’t cooperating with your gardening
plans, you can always create an indoor garden.  An old wagon can become a flowerbed.  Fill it with moss ferns, boxwood, diascia and other flowers of your choosing.  Once they’re placed inside the wagon, the “garden” can be rolled into any room and made the focus of attention.
