I can write no stately proem
As a prelude to my lay;
From a poet to a poem
I would dare to say.

For if of these fallen petals
One to you seem fair,
Love will waft it till it settles
On your hair.

And when wind and winter harden
All the loveless land,
It will whisper of the garden,
You will understand.

~ Oscar Wilde

Oscar Wilde was not only one of London's most famous playwrights in the 1890's, but he remains one of the most fascinating literary figures to date.  The Irish poet is remembered for his wit, epigrams, conversation and ideals of beauty.  His controversial imprisonment and early death have been the source of great analysis in the past century.
