In The Mill and the Cross, Hauer plays Pieter Bruegel, the artist behind the famous 16th century painting The Way to Calvary. As the film unfolds, the viewer is taken into the painting, and introduced to its subjects. The film’s stunning cinematography and effects drew positive attention at Sundance.
