Yum! Yum!

Today we return to our "exploring an era" section with a few more tidbits from today's date in 1931.

Our first snippet comes from the column "Foods Favourable to Beauty":

Green leaves for clear skins!
Vegetables of the green leaf variety are very high in their water content, which, combined with their characteristic bulk roughage, makes them excellent foods to offset the clogging and sluggish action of the heavy carbohydrate winter diets.
...
Chard and spinach are particularly rich in vitamin A. They are good foods to increase stamina, contribute to bright eyes, thick hair and glowing skin.
Green cabbage and spinach, both splendid cleansers, are rich in vitamin C, and are most beneficial to combat malnutrition and promote digestive regularity; also to counteract acne and clogged pores in general.
...
The best method of steaming the leaf vegetables is to place in a deep pot several slices of bacon or lean salt pork, and after brazing, put in the well-washed vegetables and enough water to cover well the bottom of the pot; add salt and pepper, cover tightly and simmer at boiling point until cooked. Serve in own juice with a bit of butter added.

We don't think anyone would disagree that veggies are vital, but it seems to us that the bacon fat might counteract their nutritional benefit, not to mention their effect on the complexion!

We were also amused by this piece of etiquette advice, shared on the same day:

It is never necessary to eat little nibble of food, but, as has been said before, a mouthful the size of a cubic inch is approximately as large as a mouthful of anything should be. To see some one stretching his mouth as though he were in a dentist's chair, and cramming food into it unitl the jaws can hardly close, is likely to result in the worst offense it is possible to commit. To chew with the mouth open, to talk with the mouth full enough to show the slightest glimpse of food contained therein, is utterly revolting. - Emily Post

Where is Wind at my back? It was on INSP at 7 p.m. weeknights. Now it's Dr. Quinn! Please tell me what channel and when you are airing this again. A wonderful story.

Hi Connie, We're sorry that you're having difficulty finding the show on the air. It should be airing at 7pm on weekdays on a regular basis, though there was one interruption last week for a Waltons marathon. Unfortunately, we do not have any involvement with the show's scheduling, so we aren't always aware of programming changes. We would recommend that you contact INSP directly for scheduling information and concerns. You can reach them via Facebook, or their website: http://www.insp.com/contact/ We're glad you enjoy the show, and hope that you're able to watch it in its entirety!
