Ever nifty!: 1930s Slang

Wind at My Back gives us a taste of some of the great turns of phrase that were popular in the 1930s, particularly from the lips of Grace Bailey. Here are a few more examples of 30s slang!

bad liquor: belly wash; rot gut

attractive girl: a queen; nifty

attractive person: a smooth; smoothie

bluff: to buffalo

excellent: aces-up; hot; mean; sweet

excuse to leave in a hurry: gotta see a man about a dog

expression of emphasis: you're darn tootin'!

perfect person or thing: a knock-out; lulu; wow

study: to crack a book; get wised up

uncomplimentary remark: a slam

understand: to recognize the score

very much agitated: to have kittens

zero grade: a goose egg
