Anne's Pink And Yellow Icing Drop Cookies

“I’m going to have the daintiest things possible . . . little jelly tarts and ladyfingers, and drop cookies frosted with pink and yellow icing, and buttercup cake. And we must have sandwiches too, though they’re not very poetical.”

You can really use any cookie recipe that allows you to scoop and drop, for drop cookies, but in the spirit of drop cookies with pink and yellow icing like Anne wanted, this recipe features sugar cookies.

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp almond extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt


  • 1/2 cup  softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • Pink and yellow food coloring

Add sprinkles if wanted!



1.          Preheat oven to 350.

 2.         Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.

3.         In bowl or stand mixer cream together shortening, butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg, vanilla and almond extract and mix together.

4.         Mix baking powder, salt and flour in a separate bowl. Gradually add to the wet mixture until blended.

5.         Lightly roll dough into balls, and drop parchment paper lined baking sheet. Press top of cookies half way down.

6.          Bake for 10-12 minutes.


1.      Beat butter until fluffy using a hand mixer.

2.      Add vanilla and milk and blend lightly.

3.      Add powdered sugar.

4.      Add food coloring and blend until texture is thick and soft.

5.      Add icing to cookies. Sprinkles optional.
