Walter Blythe's Monkey Face Cookies

Adriana Pacheco

“In a very brief time everything had changed. Walter was in bed, warm, fed, comforted. Susan had whisked on a fire, got him a hot cup of milk, a slice of golden-brown toast and a big plateful of his favourite"monkey face" cookies, and then tucked him away with a hot-water bottle at his feet. She had kissed and anointed his little bruised knee. It was such a nice feeling to know that someone was looking after you...that someone wanted you...that you were important to someone.” – Anne of Ingleside, Chapter 10.

This delicious recipe is a take on molasses cookies and if you are an Anne of Green Gables book fan, we guarantee that you’ll be thinking of young Walter Blythe whenever you make them.

  • 1 cup white  sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 5 cups all-purpose  flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla  extract
  • 2 tsp. ground  cinnamon
  • 4 tsp. baking  soda
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1  tsp. Vinegar
  • Raisins  for decorating

  1. Add  the 1 tsp. of Vinegar to the 1 cup of milk, set aside.
  2. In a  large bowl, cream together the sugar and shortening until smooth. Stir in  the molasses and vanilla, then combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda,  and salt.  Stir into the mixture alternately with the sour milk. Cover and chill for one hour.
  3. Preheat  the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets. On a  lightly floured surface, roll out about 1/3 of the dough to 1/4 inch in  thickness. Cut into circles about 3 inches in diameter using a cookie  cutter or drinking glass. Place cookies 2 inches apart onto the cookie  sheets. Place three raisins onto the center of each cookie, spaced apart   to form eyes and a mouth.
  4. Bake  for 8 to 10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Allow cookies to cool on the  baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing.
